Constantly changes paths can make you appear confused and undetermined to others.

Befriend a trustworthy person in the same business field. This person will be invaluable when you have an idea and you want to make sure it is actually viable. You will, of course, have to be available to your "business buddy," as well, as this sort of relationship is a two-way street.

Don't be overbearing when your subordinates are learning a new process. Instead, ask them how they learn best. You might be surprised to find out that some of your subordinates want direct instruction, while others want to take a more trial-and-error approach to learning. Unless there are specific reasons why accommodating them would be problematic, try to allow for both types of learning.

Empower your employees. Leadership isn't just about decision making. It's also about knowing when to give up the power to your trusted colleagues. When you let them make decisions, you are helping to build their loyalty to the company. They'll feel respected, and most importantly, wanted. That's a big thing for the health of your business.

Good leaders don't lower morals to compete. When the competition engages in questionable practices, look for other ways to compete with them. You need not follow their lead just to stay relevant. If you're able to figure out new ways to compete with them, you'll be happier with the decision you made.

An effective leader is one who speaks and acts with authenticity. Authenticity goes beyond truthfulness. To act with authenticity is to lead with both your heart and your head. Not only do you state the truth, but you also act in accordance with the words you've spoken. This demonstrates integrity and dedication to ethical, effective leadership.

Set a good example for your team. Expect the same level of professionalism and conduct from yourself that you expect from your team. Don't expect your team to be friendly and upbeat if you always have a solemn demeanor. If you expect error free work, make sure your own passes muster.

Good leaders identify and understand their obstacles before encountering them in insurmountable ways. Learn to anticipate a crisis and take steps to avoid it. It is possible to have a positive attitude and still not be in denial about potential pitfalls. Delegate team members to minimize risks using each person's individual strengths.

Have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish with your business in the short term and the long term. You and your employees will be better able to stay on course when everyone understands your vision so make sure they understand it. Make small changes when necessary but always stay focused on your vision.

Try adding value to people every single day. Several great leaders will take a minute to sit and think about whether or not they have added value to another person the same day.
